Keyboard Magazine Recommends Linux

Filed under: Beryl / Compiz Fusion, music, pc/linux, ubuntu — jschwa @ May 7th, 2007

For music production. “You might think there’s no way a free operating system written by volunteers could compete when it comes to music production. But in the past couple of years, all the tools you need to make music have arrived on Linux.” I’d quote more but I made the mistake of refreshing just as the story got slashdotted. So here’s a picture of a man and his wife with a synth cake.

Story.

One of the apps they recommend, Ardour, looks absolutely awesome with Beryl installed.

the joys of a new job

Filed under: Beryl / Compiz Fusion, all my jobs, pc/linux — beerorkid @ Apr 10th, 2007

So Monday night after my first day I go for a bike ride with friends and Fuggles, she did 10 miles. I enjoy a few brews, 3-4 over the course of the whole evening, hardly a buzz (over 5 hours). Yet Tues morning I feel hungover. I now know what it was. I had to mess with windows all fricking day at my new job. It just drained me working with the craptacular OS. I hate to be a snob, but it is just so frustrating dealing with something so inferior when you have to administer a network. Putty, winscp, all the rebooting, ugh……

I got a crappy workstation that had XP installed on it to use. I worked with the guys, got used to their domain setup, got my computer all in order, it sucked. First off I had to use windows on a crappy PC. It just sucked all the joy out of the whole new job thing. Yes working at the state IT dept I will be in windows often. But using it as my desktop just killed me. I can deal with windows in a VM as long as I am actually using linux as my desktop.

So I go home, download the newest beta ubuntu linux, feisty fawn, and load it up at work today. I get my XP virtual machine going but the PC I am working on only has 512 of ram and it is hurting. The guys I work with feel my pain and hook me up with an awesome machine (they suggested it, I did not bitch a bit). A pentium 4 dual core 3.2 ghz dual monitor 2GB of RAM badass. I went into work this eve for a few hours just to get it all kicking. The thing is rocking with beryl and my XP VM has a gig of ram for itself. I like new job ;) Can’t wait to go in tomorrow.

So earlier in the day I posted an article on beryl and compiz hooking back up. Well I linked to the blog I found the article via digg and have seen with my stat program a bunch of links coming from the comments where my post is listed as a pingback.

So I can see people come to my site from there, they look and see I really added nothing much just linked to the blog and then they go straight to my hotties section. That is funny. Also I have noticed those posts get a bunch of hits. You are all pervs ;) Iffin you want more hotties make sure to check out my girlie gallery.

Oh and the merger of compiz and beryl is gonna happen according to this.

 compiz and beryl to merge?

according to this guy, possibly.

I don’t want to be over dramatic, but this could not have come at a better time. The 3d desktop is the first thing to grab the general public’s imagination and push people into trying out Linux. Compiz and Beryl provide an experience you really can’t get on Windows or Mac. There is an exciting Wild West feel to the projects. As things mature, this will be what brings Linux to the mainstream. The passion everyone involved feels may look like a negative. It is the project’s greatest strength.

UPDATE: seems it is happening according to this.

compiz community member hacks beryl site

from beryl site

On January 2nd, 2007 Beryl was the victim of an online attack directed at our MySQL server. This attack removed most entries for the past several weeks and will cost countless hours in repair and recovery. Logs of the attack have been salvaged and analyzed, and the likely origin of the attack identified. To save as much hysteria as possible, this attack appears to be isolated to the machine of a Compiz community member whose handle will not be released at this time. Logs of the attack will be made publically available once they have been turned over and reviewed by the proper community authorities. The Compiz community has been extremely helpful in dealing with this crisis and have offered additional insight and information to the attack. To put some additional fears to rest, the forums are unnaffected and continue to function normally, the blog, dev blogs, and wiki all suffered hits however. T he recovery process has begun. As updates continue we will post them here.
–The Beryl Team

UPDATE - The “attack” on the site thus far (log review is still going on) seems to be the result of a social engineering effort which allowed the attacker to gain access to a fairly unpriviledged account, but enough to drop some tables. The attacker did not use a proxy and will be reported to their local authorities. Some good news, most content has been restored and more is being restored now.

A person with ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, for he or she has a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that he or she belongs in a greater whole and is diminished when others are humiliated or diminished, when others are tortured or oppressed.
