These intrigued me and for under $10 I picked up a Norpro Stoneware Butter Keeper. Smoosh in a soft stick of butter and use 1/2 cup of water. I let it sit on the counter for most of the day and had some toast in the evening. It spread like butter or something. A nifty and simple product.
