So you prob all know I am a linux whore. Been using linux for about 4 years and know how to use it very well to accomplish many tasks. heck it is superior over windows in so many ways I cannot list them all. So I hardly ever boot into XP (dual boot set up), but I did a few weeks ago when we got the Wii so Theresa could update the logitech remote for the Wii. I noticed that my DVD drives had completely disappeared from “My Computer” Well it was no biggie cuz I just went to the web to download the new software for the remote.
Well it kinda irked me and last night I got back in there and tried to figure it out. I had not done any hardware changes, heck I have not taken the cover off my PC for prob 6 months. I used my skilz and nothing would make them appear. So searched the web and found the fix.
Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. (Code 37)
Run REGEDIT, open up the following folders:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SYSTEM
CurrentControlSet
Control
Class
{4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}After clicking on {4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} you should see two settings on the right-hand side:
“Upperfilters”
“Lowerfilters”Click on each of them, press DELETE and click YES.

That is pure crap. One should not have to hack the registry at any time, it is very dangerous. Now in linux often I run into some issues and have to fix them, but to completely loose your optical drives is bullshit. The only reason I would ever boot into XP is to play games. And frankly I do not see myself doing that any time soon.
Very soon I will be reformatting my PC to shrink that dam XP partition and install the new version of ubuntu. That is gonna be a good day. Plus when I am forced to use windows I use it in a virtual machine. Rebooting sux.
