Miracle berry tablets from thinkgeek are strange as heck

We have seen these on shows and on the internets. We got a thinkgeek catalog and saw they had them and had to try.
The berry itself has a low sugar content and a mildly sweet tang. It contains an active glycoprotein molecule, with some trailing carbohydrate chains, called miraculin. When the fleshy part of the fruit is eaten, this molecule binds to the tongue’s taste buds, causing sour foods to taste sweet. While the exact cause for this change is unknown, one hypothesis is that the effect may be caused if miraculin works by distorting the shape of sweetness receptors “so that they become responsive to acids, instead of sugar and other sweet things”. This effect lasts 15–60 minutes.
It is crazy. The dried bits taste like a vitamin C pill with berry flavor. It does feel strange on the tongue and makes you salivate like crazy. Not the best tasting, but more of a weak drop that is chalky. I chomped some lemon and you get the lemon sour flavor and smell right away. I think the nose is playing a big part in the initial taste. After that it is really sweet. I stopped for a minute and savored and it seemed like I ate a spoonful of sugar. Orange was sweet, but not as much as the lemon. Lime was not all that sweet. Tried some salt and vinegar chips and they tasted sweet. Washed it all down with some orange juice and it was like drinking corn syrup.
Thing is once the goop is washed off your tongue it is pretty much over. I read beers taste different and tequila is extra smooth. Sucked on another tablet and did not notice much from the Jose because it is such crappy crap and alcohol tasting. Will put off the guinness and BLVD wheat tomorrow.
