Winter storm cancels Nebraska polar bear plunge

Filed under: Nebraska, Regular News — beerorkid @ Nov 30th, 2007

Man the news loves Nebraska these days

USA today article

OMAHA (AP) — Weather forecasters predict Nebraska will receive a treacherous mix of sleet, freezing rain and snow this weekend, so it’s understandable that events may get canceled.

But one of the first cancellations announced Friday afternoon came from an unexpected source: organizers of the Polar Bear Plunge.

The chilling swim in Omaha’s Zorinsky Lake raises money for the Special Olympics, but organizers decided to postpone the event because of the weather.

“We were kind of worried about the ice coming and people driving to the event,” said Wendy Jackson, with Special Olympics of Nebraska. “We don’t want anybody hurting themselves.”

So, the annual Polar Bear Plunge has been rescheduled for Dec. 8 at 11 a.m.

New York Times makes Nebraksa look like we are all…, oh wait many of us are…, oh well you know what I mean.

A Rural Dance Tradition in Twilight

Polka came to Nebraska in the 1850s, when Czechs fled worsening economic conditions in Bohemia and Moravia, drawn by the promise of large tracts of American farmland. In the beginning polka meant just one thing: a specific, two-beat couples dance. But now it describes a range of dances and rhythms usually achieved with an accordion, a tuba and sentimental lyrics about family, food, love and rural memories.

think we are getting burned out on Omaha.

Filed under: Nebraska, random crap — beerorkid @ Nov 12th, 2007

IMG_8120.JPG

So we had tickets to see spamalot from Theresa’s parents and figured we would have some fun up in Omaha before the show. There was the husker game so we left about 1:30 to make sure we would avoid the traffic of drunks in red. Before we went we were like “what we gonna do?” “I dunno”….. When we got to Omaha it was the same. We had 6 hours to kill and saw the Nebraska furnature mart and headed there to kill some time.

Oh man I sooooo wanna see the rest of the crap in this post… »

NFM should be declared its own town or city. That place is fricking huge. It needs a tram. We made it through electronics and a bit of the furniture when we realized we did not bring any water or nourishment and should turn around to avoid death. They have an Apple dept so I got to mess around with an itouch. Browsing the web (my site of course) was fricking cool.

Decided to hit up one of my favorite places the family fun center. It had been a while since we had been there. Man has it changed. They used to have 10 pinball machines, now only 2. Basically the place has turned into one of them put a token in and get tickets places. Oh well.

Headed to the old market and stopped into upstream for some brews and appetizers. Our fave appetizer is not on the menu any more, but a blonde pizza hit the spot. Basically wandered around and hit a few more bars / shops. We checked the menu’s of a bunch of places cuz we wanted another appetizer. Did not find much and headed into billy frogs for some cheap bar grub. The tato skins had imitation bacon bits on them. So lame. We skipped M’s cuz they looked really busy. Last night I was informed that they have tons of appetizers and rule. Oh well.

Spamalot was pretty awesome for a musical. It made fun of musicals and was Monty Python. Laughed a bunch. 10,000 X better than Cats.

Sure there is tons of stuff to do in Omaha, but we were pretty bored and burnt out on the place at the moment. Wonder what there is to do in Grand Island.

take that auditor guy nebraska.gov is awesome

Filed under: Lincoln News, Nebraska, lincoln sites — beerorkid @ Nov 6th, 2007

Remember when I mentioned the auditor guy wanted to keep Theresa down? Well they just placed in the top 10 of state websites once again. nebraska.gov

hat tip to Lincolnite since the LJS does not have the article on its website. Seems like a conspiracy to me.

The man trying to keep Theresa down

Auditor thinks state should consider running its own Web site

So Theresa works for NIC as a developer (computer programmer) and Mr Foley does not like that it is not done by a company in NE. Since I work for the Legislature I really cannot have an opinion on Mr Foley. Although he reminds me of Santorum often.

Still NIC does an amazing job and I hobe Theresa does not have to worry about her future with them.

The comments on the story make me smile though.

Nebraska State Capitol
I know of some Department of Road employees who got jack squat for a raise - 0 percent - and now they get this good news:

State employees will pay almost $50 a month more for family coverage, and about $14 a month more for single coverage, under the state’s most expensive plan. About 13,500 workers use the state’s health insurance.

A person with ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, for he or she has a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that he or she belongs in a greater whole and is diminished when others are humiliated or diminished, when others are tortured or oppressed.
