sites / books for recipes?

Postby beerorkid » 08 Feb 2010, 14:35

We are in quite the rut meal wise recently.

I have spent time on http://simplyrecipes.com/ and the food network looking for ideas. http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/ was good for a while.

I tried making a family-sized home made chicken pot this weekend. It rocked!

http://www.cooks.com/

I use this one a lot. It gives me enough options for a variety on standard dishes, and allows me to compare and contrast cooking styles similar to my own.

It's hard to beat the internet for recipes once you know what you want to prepare.
I usually see something on TV I would like to cook, do a search, and pick out the easiest, or most sensible recipe.
I have some good books that were gifts, and I have found some good ideas, but it's usually one or two things out of the whole book. But books are good for basic techniques for certain types of ethnic foods.
I have one book I seem to use a lot. It's "Mexican Everyday" by Rick Bayless, from his PBS show.
Last night I made tortilla soup, with all of the garnishes, homemade tortillas with my new tortilla press. His book was handy with the pico, guacamole, types of melting cheese (I used Asadero..yum).

I got The Cook's Bible by Christopher Kimball from the library and it is awesome. If you like America's Test Kitchen or Cook's Country on PBS, you'll love it. I hope they have another copy because I am going to renew this one a few more times! I have about 50 cookbooks, but that one and Joy of Cooking are my favorites and the ones I use the most. I love the JOC jambalaya; get some Super Saver andouille and try that sometime. I remember T liking the andouille at CR.

On the web, I like http://www.epicurious.com/. I am a pretty good cook and I have all my basic recipes down, so that is where I go if I'm in the mood for something new.

I'm returning The French Laundry Cookbook to the library soon, so tackle that one.

Thanks for the tips so far. Cooks.com always seems too cluttered. I still check it out. Theresa wants to go to B&N to get some books and is going to see how much they want for Joy.

Still can't find an andouille that comes close to the stuff at CR. I even tried making my own. Theresa is very picky.

I'll get the recipe James & I use to make ours. Perhaps that will do the trick.

Also, Epicurious needs to make a damned Android app!

I like this one...
http://www.memakefood.com/

Dude video tapes himself preparing stuff with a camera taped to his bike helmet (lulz). Food is good, but dude is butt ugly.

I've had luck with www.allrecipes.com. You can sort everything by rating and it's easy to view the reviews, which usually have good tweaks.

I like Recipezaar, mostly for its robust search engine. You can, for example, search for "tomato lentil soup" then filter the selections by ingredient, cooking time, rating, etc. It wasn't working very well yesterday though. It's also interesting to read others reviews. If you search for me: ElleFirebrand, I have 200 reviews and a few original recipes on there.

Otherwise, Epicurious.com and myrecipes.com are decent. Cookbook-wise, I love Cooks Illustrated magazine and Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill. My one qualm about Flay is that his dishes require a lot of prep... usually making some sauce with exotic ingredients... but they are usually very richly flavored and worth the effort.

I want to buy: Thirty-Minute Pasta and 660 Curries.

We just tried Spaghetti with Mascarpone & Proscuitto from Thirty-Minute Pasta and it was absolutely delicious... a pretentious pasta carbonara.

looks like we are going to try some new things. http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2009 ... callopine/

gonna sub zuchinni for the mushrooms though.

also some other lighter sauced pasta with some veg dishes.

then a chicken and rice soup

I need to learn some good bread recipes though. I subbed butter for oil in the horn roll recipe this weekend and they were so bland. ugh....
