do you have what it takes to be the next catty girl?

Brigitte Dale is moving to LA and the LJS is looking for a new catty girl.

Be the next Catty Girl

Brigitte Dale now calls Hollywood —that would be The (323) — home. Meanwhile, back here in the (402), we’re on the hunt for her replacement.

Actually, we think you may have what it takes to be the next Catty Girl. That means teaming up with Cara Pesek to offer readers weekly advice, plus blogging regularly here at Catty Girls Discuss.

Interested? Write up a short article — no more than 400 words, please — that hits on a Catty topic (fashion, relationships, trends, or observations about twentysomething life in Lincoln, to name a few examples), and send it to cpesek@journalstar.com.

We’ll publish some submissions here at the Catty Girls blog, as well as in the print edition of The (402), which runs Tuesdays and Thursdays. We’ll take submissions until Aug. 15. Then, on Aug. 19, we’ll unveil the newest Catty Girl.

So, what are you waiting for? Sharpen your wit, sharpen your claws, get to your keyboard and get catty.

them Lincoln photogs got some love from the LJS

LJS article

It started with a Flickr.com discussion thread titled, “Photowalk anyone?” Ever since, the Flickr group has shot and posted photos exclusively of Lincoln. They’ve shot UNL’s Maxwell Arboretum, the Haymarket, the Nebraska State Capitol and, most recently, Sunken Gardens.

In two years of shooting, the group has an archive of nearly 5,000 photos of all things Lincoln, serving as a big, loving, knowing tribute to our city.

One thing the Lincoln Flickr group strives for, said group administrator and co-founder Sarah Rosenau, is to be welcoming to all ages and skill levels.

From little kids to old men. From novices to pros. But most of the members fall into the gray area.

“I think what Flickr does is it gets people that would have never considered either amateur photography or semipro photography to pick up a camera,” Rosenau said. “People can get inspired by a really talented and artistic photographer, and then they’re challenged to imitate. People are exposed to a higher level of photography in some people’s photo streams.”

 AT&T signal here in Lincoln?

Filed under: Gadgets, lincoln — beerorkid @ Jul 9th, 2008

I am pretty sure I will be getting an iphone here soon. I am a bit worried about the signal here in this fine star city. Anyone want to ease my fears or scare the crap out of me?

Good discussion over in the forum.

Coverage blows in so many ways. Usually can’t get calls/call out from inside The Mill. Can’t get signal inside MY OWN RESIDENCE! I have to go stand on the porch to use my phone at home, and frankly, sometimes I want to lay on the couch in my jammies to talk to my mom, and maybe watch tv at the same time. Nope. Have to go outside. As in, right onto A st. Any idea how fricken loud that is? Or have to go out into the back yard. You have no idea how angry-making it is. I mean, it includes text messages, though sometimes I can sneak those in where a call would have gotten dropped. Your dreams of internet cruising may be more like nightmares.

Toured the Norris Legislative chamber restoration. It was really cool

IMG_1875

The flickr set. And each pic links to flickr so you can view larger sizes.

The Journal Star had an article on the restoration today. You can also watch a video. Legislative employees were offered the chance to view the work and I jumped at the chance.

The chamber is huge. All the desks were covered in wood, carpet covered in plastic, and an amazing scaffolding fills the chamber. It created a floor 40 feet up so the restoration of the wood ceiling could be done. The scaffolding was not anchored to the walls so it swayed from the people on it. It was quite a strange feeling.

lots more below

Oh man I sooooo wanna see the rest of the crap in this post… »

We entered through the 3rd floor door where people can sit in the balcony.

IMG_1820

there was so much scaffolding and many layers of levels for workers to use.

IMG_1821

A look down at the covered desks and you can see the chandeliers that were lowered.

IMG_1825

The temp floor was about 7 foot tall in some areas and you had to really duck or crawl under some of the big sections.

IMG_1833

They left a section uncleaned so you could see the contrast.
IMG_1834

IMG_1836

they did not vacuum this spot so you could see how bad it was.

IMG_1841

They are just cleaning with a very mild PH neutral cleaner and multiple wipes with clean water to not hurt the varnish covered wood. You can see the difference in this pic well.

IMG_1842

They are trying to use as little water as possible. Cleaning of the limestone and tiles is done with a latex based coating they apply, let dry, and then peel off. Here are some pieces that have been peeled.

IMG_1843

IMG_1849

I asked about the gold (23 Karrat) and how it was applied cuz it looked like paint. He showed us a piece of the paper they used to transfer the designs to the wood. The paper was drawn on, then perforated, then a graphite bag was patted on the lines to transfer the outline. Then an adhesive was painted on and allowed to get to the still tacky stage which would let the goild foil stick. If you looked really close you could see the overlapping of some pieces.

IMG_1850

That pattern above made this part. It looks like it is smiling ;)

IMG_1876

Water damage over the years is noticeable. This was cleaned and the restorers will try to get it looking right later.

It was really neat to see it up close.

« Enough crap for me, close it up please

Cory rip your head off and blank down your throat Kibler

Filed under: lincoln, music — beerorkid @ Jun 17th, 2008

There are a few dudes I swoon over in the Lincoln music scene. One would be Cory Kibler. You can get his solo album free from his label here.

He posted some more free stuff over on the forum and one is a song I just happened to capture last year. I loaded it up to the youtubes so others can enjoy.

I would pour out some of my 40, but that would just add to the flooding in wilderness park

Filed under: Lincoln News, bikes, biking community, lincoln, wilderness park — beerorkid @ Jun 12th, 2008

So bummed to see this. Shawn Doné sent me this vid he made of the storm and the state of wilderness park. I know wilderness park is supposed to flood when the salt creek gets too high, but this is very sad to see.

the storm from Shawn Doné on Vimeo.

Thanks for the vid Shawn. Hope to see you on the trail if it ever dries.

Check out his amazing lightning photos here

EDIT: Karl checked out the trail and provided an update.

I went back in there last weekend to check on a few spots, and
clear blow-down. It was very wet, flooded in spots, and not in
any way rideable. As it goes with floods, some places are
eroded, other places have had silt and sand deposited. I
saw some places that had gained 6 inches of silt, and that helps
fill in the “cupping” we get in the tread.

The first repair you folks did, the “dam” held up very well!
I seeded it with blue and side-oat gramma, and the roots kept
the soil on top.

The second repair, under the bridge did well. there was some
erosion, but not much. the only real problem is that the north
side ditch filled in with silt. On the bonus side, there is a
large deposit of white sand on the bank or the creek that cam be
moved into the trail.

The third, where we just placed rock over the fabric… well
we didn’t put soil on that because we didn’t quite have a
handle on where the water was going to go. Now we know. Lots
and lots of water comes right down the trail, over the berm
in the corner and down to the “dam”. The water moved quite
a bit of the rock around, and the fabric is exposed in places.
It won’t be hard to fix, but something will have to be done
to keep it from happening again.

Post this if you want. The important message is:
DON’T RIDE IN THE MUD…Please!

(BTW, I found someone’s cell phone out there, contact me to reclaim it).

I headed down to the salt creek to see what it looked like

Filed under: Lincoln News, lincoln — beerorkid @ Jun 11th, 2008

IMG_1721

Yeah it was up and flowing really fast. But, it was nothing like I have seen in the past. One huge storm after a few did not put us in danger. You can see the damage from the previous weeks water that flattened all the grass. It apparently got pretty close. (Not in this pic, but in the daylight)

I have to have flood insurance where I live. A video on PBS, which I will upload I swear, had the guy standing on the levee a few blocks down saying when Lincoln floods it will be here. Joy :(

The real bummer is the underpass that is really nice and decorated by a local artist is completely flooded. It has been for a week or so. I need a snorkel to get down there and clear the drain. It was at least 3.75 -4 feet deep. It almost touched the light.

IMG_1724

Our houses around here are all built up on higher ground (and mine is 107 years old), but I really fear if the water rose 60 more inches we would be hosed. A neighbor had some sewer work done and found the original sidewalk almost a foot below the current level. sigh….

Good news is that my recent edging work kept my section of sidewalk the least pool like on the block. I rule ;)

A person with ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, for he or she has a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that he or she belongs in a greater whole and is diminished when others are humiliated or diminished, when others are tortured or oppressed.
