Bread & Cup in Lincoln NE part 1

Wow. The blog coverage and hype on this place has been intense. Comments on my site, and over at Lincolnite. The word of mouth is spreading very well. My good friend Brandon’s lady friend is a prep cook there. She went off about how awesome her job and the place was. Theresa was excited to check out their cin rolls, which Candice told me are covered with a caramel glaze.
We headed down there this afternoon to check it out. The outside construction is not done, but they are open and serving great stuff. Theresa got a coffee which came as a french press single serve and enjoyed it. I got a Left Hand milk stout.
- OK just for this reason alone I am hooked on this place. First off French Press coffee is pretty cool. And they have an awesome selection of really good brews. It is prob the only place I can think of that has good coffee and beers on tap. We will be visiting this place often I am sure for just that reason.
They had some of their wheat baguette up for sample. It was divine.

We had heard so much about their cin rolls that we ordered 2 to go, a cheese plate with three diff cheeses, a few loafs of bread, and two truffles. We were not too specific about what we wanted to “go” and everything was packaged up “to go” for us. We would of liked to have had the cheese plate to enjoy there, but after getting home and seeing how much was in there, we would of gotten a to-go container for the leavings anyway. Looks like we got a super rich parm, and 2 Bleu cheeses with a whole wheat baguette sliced up to go with it.
The cin rolls look awesome. They each came with a side of the caramel sauce to go with them. They will make a great sun morn treat.
The truffles look awesome as well. Will update later on those.
The place is very clean. It is nicely laid out and although the decorations are simple, it really looks classy. Having the bread on display made my mouth water. The owner said her husband worked with La Quartier, that shows with the good bread. We picked up a chebatta loaf as well. We are now completely addicted to good local bread and I bet we will be getting a bunch from Bread & Cup.

So why is this part1? Well I have not even begun to find out how good all their different offerings are. From soups to gourmet sammiches. There is gonna be a bunch of stuff to check out. We are pretty cited to keep coming back and getting to know our favorites. From what I have heard, we will not be let down at all.

We went on Monday night. Originally we were told Bread & Cup was only open until 8:00. They said they stay as long as there are people there, 11:30 on Saturday. Good place to go for French Press coffee, beer, and desert. We tried the Fourplay (four deserts), and a cheese plate (three cheeses and a bunch of good bread). The gouda was seriously good, and one of the deserts, called a French Kiss, was to die for. Apparently it’s Bailey’s Irish cream mixed with some really special chocolate. Who knew that Bailey’s could be used for something that good? We will be going back.

I have never been treated, in my 66 years, as poorly as the last visit here! I have previously thought the food good but pretty overpriced and the staff bordering on insulted that you bothered them with your order. Further re: putting the total on the bill…tip…at the counter with no chance to merit the food and service ahead of time is not appropro! BUT the worst…, I ordered a soup called potato boil assuming it was potato soup. It arrived a broth with onions, no potatoes and corned beef! I hate corned beef, and said you may take this back and bring me the lentil. I was advised after the staff person took it back that the manager would see me. She came and said she would sell me…SELL ME!!!! a different soup for half price. I thought she was kidding. I said you are kdding right? She said no, she could no longer serve it and was not agreeable that it should have stated on the menu card by at the place you order that it had meat/corned beef in it. I would never have ordered it if I had known. Then she said do you want the other soup or not? The most unapologetic treatment I have ever had. My companion even said, you are not serious? She stated absolutely, I can’t resell this. Like it’s my fault, I should have known this potato boil soup had the meat in it? I said no. I then had to ask for butter and jam or something to put on the bread I had ordered on the side. I would have left immediately, but my friend had received her $19 lunch and I could not make her leave it. I paid $9.68 for a small loaf of soda bread and the soup that went back! Not even an offer of a piece of cheese or anything. I still can’t believe it. My friend and I have been here a number of times before and have commented about the attitude of the help, but felt even though the food was a bit pricey, the bread was good and we would continue to meet here. I really don’t know why we did as the acoustics are terrible, but in warm weather it is nice to sit outside. Now, she says she will never darken their door again, and I know I won’t. All for want of $1.00′s worth of a different soup….and a smile. I will tell all my friends and family about this extremely unpleasant experience and as I sit here and think of it, almost bringing me to tears, treatment. Again, never anywhere in the world have I had such a sad experience at an eating establishment. P.S. As we left I noticed the words “with corned beef” added to the menu board!!!!!

That really is unfortunate Kate. I worked a bunch of years in food service and there is no way I could of agreed with charging you for a replacement soup. Being a holiday and the reliance on varying menus with new items can cause some unfortunate confusion when the descriptions are not all encompassing of the finished dish.
I do not want to sound too harsh, but yhis might be better brought up with the management rather than a wall of text on some really old post in a site you binged. (googled?)
