wilderness park lincoln ne biker side gmap

Wilderness park biker side trail map.

google earth link

I can follow most of the trail in my head, imagining every twisty turn. But looking at it from above in gmaps was a bit tricky. Zoom in, oh that looks like the trail, zoom out to get a better perspective. I follow the trail pretty good from pioneers to 14th street. Then it seems gmaps gets a bit behind the times. You cannot see any of the trail past 14th street and I cannot seem to find the EP bridge. I put in pictures where I could. Going to work on it a bunch more, but this is a start.

It is public so feel free to edit it all you want.

a little info about wilderness below.

Oh man I sooooo wanna see the rest of the crap in this post… »

Man where to begin. CVO over at FFL had written up an awesome guide complete with pictures. Unfortunatly it got lost when he switched accounts. i will just cover the basics and give a little advice.

Wilderness consists of 3 types of trails, hiker, biker, and bridal (horse). At certian points trails merge to get around narrow or dangerous parts. All trails are marked at splits with marking poles designating the type of trail.

It is pretty simple though. Hiker is usually on the east side of the salt creek, biker on the west side, and bridal mixed on both sides. Respecting the type of trail is pretty important. I do not want to hit a hiker on the biker side and hikers do not want to get hit by a biker on their side.

Most of the trail is pretty flat. There are a few elevation changes but there is no big hill that is hard to climb. it is very twisty, only a few areas have long straight sections. Some areas have some roots that make it a bit bumpy, but it is not too bad. Very often you will be in the vicinity of a cliff that leads down into the salt creek. In a few areas you are pretty close and a wreck could be pretty bad. Most of those are on the hiker side where bikes should not be anyway. Also many of those areas have paths that avoid the edges, use them. The trail switches from deep into the trees to open fields. There are only a few places where you might hit a tree if you get off the trail, but most is pretty clear. The trail is very hard packed dirt and varied from 8 inches to a couple yards wide and then the trail is grass / weeds on the sides of the trail. In average it is about 18 inches wide. In the open fields the trail gets small and is like a rut, this can make you get squirrly and might cause you to fall since your wheel is caught in the rut. I have gotten out of the groove and fell a few times myself.

All trails are two way on a single track. When biking you must be very aware. Keep the ipod out of your ears and listen, be vocal, announce when coming around the hundred or so blind corners. you never know when another biker hauling ass is headed right for ya around the blind corner on the 8 inch wide dirt path. Using a bell is your best defense. Saves your voice and can be heard from far away. There have been some bad collisions out there, Syd gives some advice. Also some folks will have their kids / dogs out there, you get yahoos who tear through without a care, just keep your eyes open.

The only place you have to cross a street is 14th if you decide to go that far. Past 14th is some darn cool trail that is multi use. When you get to the “EP” bridge on the south side it is pretty much done. The trail south of there is more of a road and is pretty lame and short.

If you are interested in mileage go here. And I have bunches of videos (most youtubes are dead, but there is the full quality video off my web server) and other wilderness news in my wilderness category.

The Paul Fell dismissal at the Journal Star is causing some public discussion. In today’s paper there is what may be the best letter to the editor I’ve ever read. Hilarious! Look for the Roger Welsch letter.

 CFS recipe from foxspit

Doubt I would ever resort to a store bought CFS, and neither would foxspit.

CFS
1 lb. boneless beef steak (round or sirloin) **I used good quality minute steak from a rancher relative of mine**
1 cup flour
1 tsp. dry mustard
Salt and pepper to taste **I don’t cook with much salt but for this recipe I was liberal with it**
Pinch cayenne **I used more than a pinch**
Vegetable oil

Gravy:
2 tbs olive or canola oil
2 cups sliced fresh mushrooms
1 tbs flour
3/4 beef or veg. broth
1/3 cup dry red wine
1 tsp Worcestershire
1 tsp freshly ground black pepper
Salt to taste

Oh man I sooooo wanna see the rest of the crap in this post… »

Fill a shallow bowl with cold water.
In another shallow bowl combine flour, mustard, salt, pepper and cayenne. **You can also just put these dry ingredients in a plastic bag and coat the meat that way.**
Dip each piece of steak in water, then dredge in the flour mixture.
Repeat this process.
When all the steaks have been coated, place them on wax paper and place them in the freezer until solid (a couple of hours) to ensure the coating wont come off when frying.

About 15 minutes before you’re going to cook the steaks, make the gravy. **I was lazy and just used a couple of packets of country gravy rather than make it from scratch.**
Put oil in a hot skillet; add mushrooms and cook until tender (3-5 minutes), stirring

frequently. Stir in flour; allow to cook about 1 minute. Add broth, wine, Worcestershire and seasonings. Bring to a boil and reduce heat. Allow to simmer until thickened.

As the gravy is cooking, heat oil in a deep frying pan or to 350 degrees in a deep fryer.

Oil should be deep enough to cover steaks while frying. Drop steaks into oil and cook about 2 minutes on each side, if you need to turn them, or until golden brown on both sides. The

less you handle/turn/mess with the steaks, the less chance you have of knocking off the delicious coating. Drain on paper towels then place steaks on platter. Douse with the gravy and serve.

 bad CFS meal :(

Filed under: me make food — beerorkid @ Jun 28th, 2007

Theresa had never had chicken fried steak and I love it. She agreed to give it a try. I researched and saw this which gave me some good ideas.

So Monday we headed to Ideal to pick up supplies. grabbed some of their ground breakfast sausage, a big chunk of sirloin. Too much stuff going on to cook it till tonight. The sirloin was a bit aged when I got it monday. Forgot butter milk so picked it up at the mexi mart on the way home. It was strangely thick and lumpy and I noticed it expired today. Did not have enough milk so T ran and got some.

I took a bite and noticed a very distinct taste. The meat had turned. I did notice a slight stink when preparing it, it looked like crap, still I tredged on. I stopped T before she ate any, but the mashed taters and sausage gravy were pretty darn good. Gonna be a long time before I try it again. Our next thing to try is a grilled chicken oriental salad. Just trying to get the dressing figured out.

Officer on leave after tussle with Hot Springs skateboarders

Hot Springs police have placed an officer on administrative leave while they investigate an Internet video that appears to show him choking three teenagers who were skateboarding.

Mayor Mike Bush said investigators have talked with passers-by and business owners who saw Officer Joey Williams stop the teens on a downtown sidewalk Thursday. A YouTube video shows Williams apparently choking one teen after forcing him to the ground, while later chasing and wrestling two others while holding them in a headlock.

Bush says he does not condone the officer’s actions. Police spokesman McCrary Means says the department will release more details later.

Williams could not be immediately reached for comment.

The video shows the youths along Hot Springs’ Central Avenue, an area where city ordinance prohibits skateboarding. Voices in the background can be heard asking Williams why he was arresting the youths.

“you gonna play Zelda, you gonna play, you get over here and play….”
Zelda the twilight princess is an awesome game. It is a bit involved and takes a really long time to beat. I am just about 1/2 way through it and have already clocked in 30 + hours of play time. I have my laptop sitting on my side table on the walkthrough and plow through till I hit a save point. Slashing huge things and solving puzzles.

The story is cool, the game is beautiful. Theresa is caught up in it but is playing vicariously through me. If I play with her not around she gets bummed and asks what she missed. Kind of like she missed an episode of a show.

Archive: Why I love riding my bike

Filed under: bikes, biking community, mental vomit, wilderness park — beerorkid @ Jun 27th, 2007

Pastor Steve wondered how cycling inspires me.

well besides my wonderful wife, it is a reason to keep on going. Got one of them desk jobby things. Was a bartender, brewmaster, delivery guy, all active jobs. Kinda put on the weight, tried a gym, not my kinda thing. A good friend was really into cycling, I got a bike and it consumed me, still does.

I often refer to wilderness park as my church, I am so in my perfect environment. My smile goes from ear to ear, even when drenched in sweat and the legs are burning. I can clear my head and think really clearly while maintaing a steady pace. often on night rides I can really get some thinking done. Seeing all of the awesome nature and animals really brings peace to me, we are truely blessed to have such a beautiful planet. I enjoy my lone rides, but also love being in with a big group. The tuesday night monkey wrench rides are a blast. 20-30 bike lovers all having a good time joking around and riding. I am home there.

Oh man I sooooo wanna see the rest of the crap in this post… »

I like my morning commutes to work as well. I start off rather slow and hit a hill right away. Come to the busy streets and see all those people in their air conditioned coffins, waiting in line, rushing, smoking, just looking unhappy. I can reflect on how lucky I am to have a good job, live close enough to ride, not have to find a parking space, and get the blood flowing. It is only 10 blocks, but it is one of the best parts of waking up.

The freedom of a bike is quite a neat thing. I can go anywhere under my own power, I can fit places other modes of transport can’t. I get to see things that many have not. The state parks and trails around here are great. A new trail is like an adventure, and I am up for it. I take bunches of pictures.

My life is really good, I have almost no stress, healthy and loving relationships with my wife and family. My work is exciting to me, it is not a burdon. i get to communicate with different folks via the internet often, I have made many friends that way. Still riding my bike makes the little things that might bum me out simply disapear. Nothing feels as good as a finishing a long ride, it is an amazing feeling.

As many on the folks from lincoln site often refer to, it truely is a lifestyle, not just a hobby. Most I have met through cycling are severely decent peeps. Hardly any negativity flows from a bunch of folk who are activly getting out and doing some riding. I feel trapped when just sitting around in a house watching TV when I know there is some twisty singletrack dirt right outside my door.

I am sure I am going to continue to keep this lifestyle up, it makes me stronger in more ways than just physical.

baconator

“Eat me schteeeeev, eeeeeeat me, comon you know you really really wanna…….”

Just look at that sucka, all glisteny and bacony. The baconator might just get Wendy’s out of its current slump. I gonna give some props to Wendy’s for a few things. First they seem to use some good meat, and how it is cooked on a griddle so it gets that slight crust, mmmmmmmm……. And the things are square, which is cool. Then their fries are pretty fricking good as well, sometimes soggy, but always salty. Being able to substitute healthier sides is pretty awesome as well, even though I would never take them up on the offer. Last their bacon fricking rules. it seems to be made out of actual bacon, unlike the crap BK or McD’s uses. Jr Bacon cheseburgers are pretty nummy.

six fricking strips of delicious bacon.
They lose me with the mayo though. Still dam that thing looks good.
Having bacon currently taking control of my internal voices is better than that dam unicorn.

EDIT: pics of one in the wild with story.

installed compiz fusion then went back to beryl

Filed under: Beryl / Compiz Fusion, ubuntu — beerorkid @ Jun 27th, 2007

Now don’t get me wrong, it was pretty cool. Actually really cool. The merging of beryl and compiz means there are so many plugins that it will make your head spin. But spinning is the problem. I run dual screens and compiz fusion does not support a big cube (spans both monitors as one cube) yet. So although I had a 4 sided cube each screen was actually an eight sided cube and were opposites of each other. Does that make sense? Well it was just annoying. It is a bug they know about and will fix here soon.

Thing is they do not even have an official release yet, it is in beta currently. They should have a stable version here soon since it is going to be included in ubuntu 7.10 Gusty Gibbon. I will use it when they fix the dual monitor thing. Cool thing is I have both installed and can switch between them, so no headaches there.

Ubuntu install, which works really nice since it is still the apt-get way. none of that tricky git stuff.

EDIT: well I am now switching back and forth. Still the multi cube irks me, but they are working on it.

EDIT II: looks like somebody found a workaround.
CCSM –> general options –> display settings –> uncheck detect outputs

there is one drawback. It does not recognize the separation of your monitors, so a maximized app will span both. Still better than having this.

Filed under: Lincoln News, letters to ed LJS, lincoln — beerorkid @ Jun 27th, 2007

professor talksalot posted this little gem on SCS.

from the LJS Your health: Stay hydrated and healthy

salty wrote on June 27, 2007 2:02 am:
” Sometimes color and odor is simply not enough. I have found that by tasting less of than a teaspoon of a loved ones urine, you can tell if they have kept themselves properly hydrated or not. If it tastes as salty as the chicken noodle soup at Village Inn, I generally advise them to drink more water. If it’s any less salty, I generally will let them know that they are drinking enough liquids to stay hydrated. DO NOT drink your own urine, it is very dangerous. It is a poison expelled by your own body. Why would you think of drinking your own urine? “

man I love that the LJS lets you comment on stories.
