Tuvans Tomorrow Night

Anyone who is a fan of throat singing, the movie Ghengis Blues, or the commentary track from the episode of Futurama about Native Martians stealing all the bugalo, the touring Tuvan group Alash is performing at the Sheldon museum tomorrow night at 7:30. Tickets are twelve bucks. If I can get off work I’m definitely going, it’s not often that a group from a tiny country in the middle of nowhere, Asia visits Lincoln. Here’s Alash’s website, which has samples of throat singing if you’ve never heard it. It’s pretty awesome. BoK, feel free to add images of Tuvans or hot girls or whatever, as you see fit.

thanks for picking up myslack today. Sounds awesome. Bela Fleck and the flecktones had Kongar-ool Ondar a Tuvan throat singer join them on some tour dates and their outbound album. Jeff Coffin of the tones apparently learned from Kongar-ool Ondar cuz he is doing it on the albums now.
Seems like it would be painful though.
Whoa saw on their site that they were students of Kongar-ool. Prob gonna have to check that out.

I want to learn how to do it, if for no reason than to freak out my roommate at six in the morning. I’ve read up a little and what I’ve heard is that it isn’t painful, it’s just an uncomfortable feeling until you get used to it. I’ll just keep practicing in the shower until I get it down.
