Beerplay 1.0

I don’t think beer gets enough action here, being part of the namesake and all, so I thought I would share the progress of my most recent batch. I’m ‘cited’ being that I have been too busy with school to brew since October (yay spring break!).

This starter is the first step in what will become a California Common (aka steam beer). I don’t usually subject my 5000mL erylinmeyer flask to such extremes as my kitchen stove, but I am out of premade starters. That will be part of the objective of this batch. I will make 15 gal. of unfermented beer (or wort as they call it), ferment 10 gal., and pressure cook the other 5 gal. of it in 1 quart jars.

The plan is to cook at my friend Dave’s house this Sunday. Anyone who is interested in checking it out is more than welcome to come. Fly me an email, and I will give you directions.

More pictures to come…

I am fortunate enough that my sis in law is a tupperware rep.

We have placed a couple orders through her and are going to be making more. Stuff just works pretty good and I had an issue with a couple of the collapsible containers and they were replaced no prob.

Ifin you looking to organize or just get some decent stuff you can find her here.

 pimp my pantry 1.0

Filed under: random crap — beerorkid @ Feb 27th, 2007

Oh how great is it to have friends who do different kinds of construction ;)
My buddy Scott is an amazing carpenter. I worked with him for a summer being his gopher. He is a severe perfectionist and when most trim carpenters slap crap together, he goes above and beyond to make sure everything is perfect.

This pic would be my pantry after I stripped it down. It did have two wire shelves on the right side there, plus a plastic utility shelf for storing crap. It was severely wasted space. Scott is gonna hook me up with the uber pantry. I have seen his work on his personal closets, absolutely amazing. He is from California, and puts California closets to shame.

I have taken a bunch of pics and some video. Work begins tomorrow and I will show the awesomeness of it when it is all done. Oh, he is for hire iffin you need something done ;)

 Koalas hate Traditional American values

Filed under: Regular News, animals — beerorkid @ Feb 27th, 2007

Australia rocked by ‘lesbian’ koala revelation

Female koalas indulge in lesbian “sex sessions”, rejecting male suitors and attempting to mate with each other, sometimes up to five at a time, according to researchers.

The furry, eucalyptus-eating creatures appear to develop this tendency for same-sex liaisons when they are in captivity. In the wild, they remain heterosexual.

Scientists monitoring the marsupials with digital cameras counted three homosexual interactions for every heterosexual one.

“Some females rejected the advances of males that were in their enclosures, only to become willing participants in homosexual encounters immediately after,” say the researchers.

“On several occasions more than one pair of females shared the same pole, and multiple females mounted each other simultaneously. At least one multiple encounter involved five female koalas.

as with most shows we liked they got canceled. Fortunately we got the episode thanks to netflix. I was really cited for the show cuz I had watched the skits on the internets that were in IFC. They are all on youtube now. Tardy is T’s favorite.

article

Letters, 2/26: Forgot about Linux
Monday, Feb 26, 2007 - 12:02:04 am CST
I was pleased to see a technical article in the Feb. 20 Journal Star, regarding the PC versus Mac commercials being shown on TV.

But alas, PC (Windows XP and Vista) and Macintosh OS X are not the only operating systems running in the world today.

There was no mention of the clear open source favorite called Linux, developed by a then student Linus Torvalds in the early 1990s.
Linux is a UNIX-like operating system that is far more powerful than anything currently offered by PC or Mac. In fact, it is said that almost all of the Internet runs on servers running Linux.

Yes, you can even run Linux on your desktop, and with a plug-in called Beryl, one has some most amazing 3D graphics unlike anything that PC or Mac can offer at this time.

Linux also runs on the same systems that PC and Mac run, and you can load Linux on either system with no problems. In fact, a Linux box setup by default is more secure than that of PC or Mac.

That said, however, there are a few tweaks to tighten up security even more, but as I said, by default, a Linux box is far more secure than either a PC or Mac system upon initial install.

The best part of Linux is that it is free for the downloading. Perhaps the next tech article will be more in depth and not ignore a popular alternative used by geeks all over the world.

A person with ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, for he or she has a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that he or she belongs in a greater whole and is diminished when others are humiliated or diminished, when others are tortured or oppressed.
